This Wilderness Trail Scenic package will have you riding and taking the sights over two days on the trail. Travel to Greymouth, collect your bike and ride from the beginning of the trail to Kumara. Stay the night in the historic town of Kumara and have your luggage transferred there while you ride. The town of Kumara was once a bustling gold mining town. Rich in history a perfect stop over while on the trail.

After a hearty breakfast ride Kumara to Lake Kaniere. You will pass remnants of the gold rush before arriving at the Kapitea Reservoir. Pass the lake then head on to the Loopline Reservoir and its ‘spillway’, for a close up look at the stone face dam that was hand-laid in 1883 by miners during the gold rush.

Carry on to the sweeping boardwalk that connects Loopline Road, then ride the gravel trail out to Old Christchurch Road. From here you’ll follow water race, old logging trams and pack track up the Kawaka Valley, passing man-made dams and fresh mountain-water weirs.

Traveling into Lake Kaniere home to towering kahikatea trees and beautiful wildlife. Lake Kaniere is a glacial lake located on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, nearly 200 m deep and surrounded on three sides by mountains and mature rimu forest. It is regarded by many as the most beautiful of the West Coast lakes, and is a popular tourist and leisure destination. From here you will be picked up and shuttled through to Hokitika for your second nights accommodation. Your bags will be transferred between your accommodations.

Shuttle back to Greymouth in the morning or take a scenic tour with Explore West Coast in the morning and returning to Greymouth at 12.30 pm in time for lunch and being able to return on the TranzAlpine train.
