Rated as one of the Top 10 Coastal Drives in the World, the Great Coast Road is a journey filled with jaw-dropping scenery, rugged cliffs, and views of the powerful Tasman Sea. This tour is perfect for travellers who want to experience one of New Zealand’s most iconic coastal landscapes — camera essential!
Departing from the central West Coast, you’ll travel north along this stunning coastal route for around 45 minutes, arriving in the unique seaside village of Punakaiki — home of the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. Formed over millions of years, these stacked limestone formations have been sculpted by sea, wind, and time into a natural masterpiece. When the tide is right, you’ll witness the blowholes in action, as sea water bursts dramatically through rock formations.
You’ll have time to explore the walkways, visit local shops, and even head into a natural limestone cavern nearby. Your guide will provide torches for a safe and fun experience inside this open-access cave nestled within the township.
To round out the adventure, enjoy a relaxing afternoon tea at the Scenic Hotel Punakaiki, located right on the beachfront. Unwind with a hot drink and treat, soaking in the views of the wild West Coast surf and dramatic limestone cliffs — the perfect way to finish your visit to this spectacular region.
Your guide will then return you to your accommodation or central Greymouth, ensuring a comfortable and scenic end to your journey.
