Gold Trail Mountain Biking is a 40km Mountain Bike Ride — Shantytown to Moana (Lake Brunner).
Choose Your Challenge: Up Cockeye Creek or Mosquito Creek
The Gold Trail Mountain Bike Ride is an unforgettable journey through the rich history and wild beauty of the West Coast. Following in the footsteps of early European and Chinese gold seekers. This 40km adventure lets riders experience the rugged terrain and gold trails that once promised fortune—and now deliver thrills.
Your ride begins in the heritage setting of Shantytown, a re-created gold rush village full of character and charm. In fact, it wasn’t until the Gold Trail was born that a peloton of mountain bikers ever rode down Shantytown’s historic Main Street. This was an iconic moment in West Coast cycling!

The final 24km of the ride is shared by both routes. It leads all riders into Moana at Lake Brunner—a picturesque finish line nestled by the lake’s edge.
Whether you’re chasing a new personal best or simply out to enjoy some of New Zealand’s finest natural scenery, the Gold Trail offers something for everyone. Two routes. One destination. An epic ride through the heart of the Untamed West Coast.
