Hugging the edge of land and sea, the Coastal Pacific is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular rail journeys. Operating during the extended summer season between October and April. This iconic train travels between Christchurch and Picton. Delivering front-row views of a coastline where the Pacific Ocean crashes against dramatic mountain ranges.
The journey offers ever-changing scenery, from braided rivers and rolling farmland to rugged cliffs, coastal beaches and bush-clad hills. One of the standout experiences is the option to stop in Kaikōura, a vibrant seaside town renowned for its world-class eco-tourism. Here you can spend the day whale watching, swimming with dolphins, or simply enjoying the laid-back coastal atmosphere before continuing your rail adventure.
At the northern end of the journey, the Coastal Pacific seamlessly connects with the Interislander ferry and Sounds Air flights in Picton, making it easy to continue on to Wellington while soaking up the breathtaking beauty of the Marlborough Sounds.
Onboard, enjoy modern comfort and panoramic viewing. A fully licensed café offers a varied menu featuring New Zealand wines and boutique beers. Temperature-controlled carriages include oversized panoramic windows and unique sky-view windows, all non-tinted and non-reflective for exceptional photography. Seating is specially designed for comfort, with table seating or reclining seats that rotate to face the direction of travel.
