What you see along the way

West Coast Scenic Taste Tours will pick up from the center of town travel along the Great Coast Road to Punakaiki. Stopping there to walk the Pancake Rocks and Blow Hole walk.

The Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point are limestone formations that began forming 30 million years ago when lime-rich fragments of dead marine creatures were deposited on the seabed. These were later overlaid by layers of soft mud and clay. Earthquakes raised them from the seabed to the level we see today.

Travel up to Tauranga Bay Seal Colony. From the car park at Tauranga Bay, a very well formed 10-minute track leads to viewing platforms over the seal colony below. Interpretive panels at the platforms provide information on the activity in the colony and the seals’ breeding cycle, as well as historical information about the sealing industry that once existed in New Zealand. Stop in for lunch at Johnny’s in Westport.

Off through the Buller Gorge to Reefton, with stops for photo opportunities. Along the way possible stop at Rotokuhu Lavender. Once in Reefton go to the Distillery famous for Little Biddy’s Gin, or wander around the charming township.

Drive back through the farm land of the Grey Valley back into Greymouth dropping off at the town square.
