Theatre Royal Hotel

The Theatre Royal Hotel is the West Coast`s only fully restored gold miners’ hotel, and once world-renowned theatre.  Our historic gold rush Hotel features six themed ensuite rooms. Each room is unique, with its blend of Victorian decor, antique furnishings and modern amenities. The hotel bar and restaurant is open daily.

Whether you are a history buff, an intrepid explorer, a Kiwi neighbour, a discerning traveler, or fun lover, the Theatre Royal Hotel knows how to look after you! We invite you to come and discover the colourful past of Kumara, which featured the Last Great Gold Rush and was the home of N.Z.’s longest serving Premier, Richard John Seddon.

Our lovingly restored hotel rooms feature antique furnishings and sumptuous bedding. Each room is named after an historical figure with a connection to the hotel’s rich past.

You could be in ‘Annie’s Room’, named after the original proprietress of the Theatre Royal; German born Annie Anderson ruled the roost for 40 years! Or perhaps it will be ‘King Dicks’ Room named after our most famous resident, Richard John Seddon who was Kumara`s first mayor and N.Z`s longest serving Premier.

Each room features a contemporary ensuite with shower and double vanity. We have one accessible room on the ground floor and five rooms on the first floor accessed by stairs.

These spacious elegant new cottages are situated directly behind the main hotel and feature large outdoor decks with lovely peaceful, private bush views.

The cottages have one large bedroom featuring two single beds (these beds can make into a king upon request). In the large light open studio / bed sitting room there is one king bed that can be converted into twin singles upon request. One cottage is wheelchair accessible. The cottages sleep 4 people.

Cottages include:

  • Heat pump/air con and double glazing
  • Kitchenette with double ceramic cooktop, microwave oven, toaster, electric kettle and coffee plunger.
  • Spacious bathroom featuring dual basins, shower and an old time hip style bath tub.
  • Television in the bedroom and the open plan studio

From all cottages you can walk through the garden to the Theatre Royal Hotel bar and restaurant.

This stately suite pays homage to the era of Kumara’s most famous resident, Premier Richard John Seddon. Comprised of a gentleman’s lounge with leather sofa and large dining table, tea & coffee making, a comfortable master bedroom and adjoining bathroom. The golden ensuite with claw foot bath and walk in shower is on the site of the original gold office.

Featuring antique furniture and William Morris wallpapers and textiles this suite boasts high and decorative ceilings with crystal chandeliers. The master bedroom is romantically appointed with a four poster bed and adjoining rose coloured bathroom, where the claw footed bath invites total relaxation. The second bedroom aptly named the French room is delicately sized with one double and one single bed. There is a second bathroom adjacent to this bedroom.

The restaurant is open from 11 am daily serving brunch or lunch until 3 pm or just join us for a coffee and a slice. Our A la carte dining is available every evening from 5:30 pm. Menu options include which Kiwi classics and West Coast specialties. Children’s menu is available.
