A easy going taste of the West Coast Wilderness Trail. Travel to Greymouth and enjoy the historic history of the town and surrounding areas. Bike hire the following day where you will ride Greymouth to Shantytown, a recreated Gold Rush Village set back in the 1900s. Spend your time soaking up the history of our gold mining era, take a steam train ride, walk through the beautiful rainforest and take the time to look through many recreated buildings.

If you wish you can enjoy lunch at the King Dick’s Café before continuing your ride on the Wilderness trail. Riding through to Kumara, once a bustling gold mining town on the West Coast it is now a major stopping point for the West Coast Wilderness Trail. Learn about the towns rich history along the heritage walking trail or visit local gold mining sites. You will have a return shuttle Kumara to Greymouth at 3.30pm.

This section of the trail is an easy grade 2. Departing opposite the historic Greymouth Railway Station, riding along the mighty Grey River and onto the wild Tasman Sea. Detour off the main trail at Paroa and travel 3.5km to Shantytown, a West Coast must see attraction. Ride back to the main trail and continue your journey crossing the Taramakau River winding your way through the Kumara bush tram line with regenerating forest and new farm land before arriving into Kumara.

Make your journey to and from Greymouth a relaxing one and take the TranzAlpine train. A world class top ten train journey. Departing Christchurch at 8.15 am and arriving into Greymouth at 1.05 pm. With the scenic carriages, fully licenced on board café, and the open-air viewing carriage, perfect for those photo opportunities not to be missed.
