Karamea
With its year round mild climate and beautiful scenery, Karamea (population 600) has something to offer everyone. Here is the West Coast gateway to the vast Kahurangi National Park and the start of the Heaphy Track – one of New Zealand’s greatest walks as well as the Wangapeka and Karamea Leslie Tramping tracks. Karamea activities include kayaking, white water rafting, heli rafting (the Karamea river is grade 5) surfcasting, superb trout fishing, golf and exploring the Oparara Basin’s limestone arches and caves or the gold mining heritage of the Fenian. 15km of old logging roads have recently been opened in the Oparara Basin for mountain biking and walking enthusiasts.
