Greymouth


Greymouth (population 12,894) is the largest town on the West Coast. Founded in the 1860s, the Grey District’s population is spread around the commercial centre of Greymouth with satellite communities north, south and east of the town. Visitors to the area can enjoy a huge range of activities from black water (cave) and white-water rafting, 4WD bike rides, and lake cruises on Lake Brunner at Moana, dolphin watching from the breakwater of the Grey River, canoeing, scenic flights……. The list is endless. Greymouth is the birthplace of Monteith’s beer and tours of the brewery are available. Visit History House, jade galleries and the replica gold-mining town, Shantytown (just south of Greymouth). Accommodation ranges from first-class hotels, motels, B&Bs, hostels and motor camps. The selection of cafes and restaurants will keep all tastes satisfied. The area also boasts some wonderful walks from one hour through to two days. Greymouth is a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the Glacier Country. The TranzAlpine makes it journey to and from Christchurch each day arriving early afternoon and returning at 1.45pm.
